Highlights Of The Gardens

Your visit to High Beeches will be a delightful experience. We offer a range of literature for those who wish to know more about the gardens at the Gatelodge entrance.

High Beeches has a magnificent collection of rare and unusual shrubs and trees from around the world, dating back to more than a century ago. Many were collected by famous plant hunters such as Ernest Wilson, George Forrest and Frank Kingdom Ward and are therefore of significant historical importance:

  • The National Collection of Stewartia Trees

  • The best acid natural flower meadow in Sussex. A Site of Special Nature Conservation Interest (SNCI)

  • Daffodil Field of Hope, commemorating loved ones – daffodils are planted in memory of friends and family. Visitors are invited to sign the book of remembrance

  • Bluebells flower throughout the glades in early May

  • The only site in the UK where the stunning Willow Gentian has naturalised in drifts of startling blue in August

  • ‘One of the finest displays of autumnal colour in the country from early September’ according to Roy Lancaster. Many North American Fall trees and Maples display glorious autumn colour

  • Champion trees – all accessible to visitors. A champion tree is officially recognised as the tallest specimen of its type in the British Isles

  • A large collection of rare and unusual Oak trees from around the world

  • Tree Trail - 23 interesting trees, with descriptions and country of origin

  • All the plants are electronically catalogued and labelled and Garden Records are carefully kept
